CALENDAR--Pope Gregory XIII 1582 A.D.
Since the Julian calendar year was off by about
eleven minutes, an error of 10 days had accumulated
by the year 1582. To make the vernal (spring) equinox
occur on March 21, Pope Gregory XIII issued a decree
which eliminated 10 days from the calendar. He
amended the Julian calendar by adding the stipulation
that century years evenly divisible by 400 should be
leap years. Thus 1600 and 2000 are leap years, but
1700, 1800, and 1900 are not.
The Gregorian calendar uses the birth of Christ as
a starting date. Dates of the "Christian era" are
denoted by "A.D." (Latin for anno domini, "in the
year of our Lord") and B.C. (before Christ).
