  1. CALENDAR--Pope Gregory XIII 1582 A.D.

  3.    Since the Julian calendar year was off by about 
  4. eleven minutes, an error of 10 days had accumulated 
  5. by the year 1582. To make the vernal (spring) equinox 
  6. occur on March 21, Pope Gregory XIII issued a decree 
  7. which eliminated 10 days from the calendar. He 
  8. amended the Julian calendar by adding the stipulation 
  9. that century years evenly divisible by 400 should be 
  10. leap years. Thus 1600 and 2000 are leap years, but 
  11. 1700, 1800, and 1900 are not. 
  12.    The Gregorian calendar uses the birth of Christ as 
  13. a starting date. Dates of the "Christian era" are 
  14. denoted by "A.D." (Latin for anno domini, "in the 
  15. year of our Lord") and B.C. (before Christ).
